The Alliance Theatre is pleased to announce the world-premiere play for all audiences, BINA’S SIX APPLES. Set in 1950 Korea at the onset of the Korean War, BINA’S SIX APPLES is a shockingly timely, and yet uplifting and hopeful, depiction of a family displaced by the devastation of war. BINA’S SIX APPLES will run on the Coca-Cola Stage at Alliance Theatre March 11–27, 2022. In addition to the powerful depiction of courage and humanity displayed on stage and the important conversations this work will spark, the Alliance has produced a resource for families on how to talk as a family about the realities of war.
By award-winning playwright Lloyd Suh and inspired by his own family's experiences in Korea during the war, BINA’S SIX APPLES tells the story of Bina, a 10-year-old girl who is separated from her family when they are forced to flee their home. The play follows her journey to reunite with her family as she discovers the power of her own resilience. Often mesmerizing, hopeful, and ultimately heartwarming, Bina will find that she’s not the only one on a difficult quest for a place to call home. BINA’S SIX APPLES is a co-production with Children’s Theatre Company where the play concluded its run in February. The Twin Cities Pioneer Press described BINA’S SIXAPPLES as “excellent...brimming with heart and vivid characters.” The Star Tribune called it "[a] must-see... sweet, soulful, and ripe with symbolism," and Talkin' Broadway called it, "beautiful… an affecting show that reaches pre-teens as well as old timers like myself...it deserves to be seen by everyone on both ends [of the age spectrum] and in-between.”
Christopher Moses, Alliance’s Dan Reardon Director of Education and Assoc. Artistic Director said of BINA’s: “This play takes its inspiration from Lloyd’s father’s experience during the Korean War and takes place during that period of unfathomable and senseless tragedy. But it remains shockingly relevant today. When the circumstances of the world no longer make sense, we rely on stories to be our guides. As we bear witness to global tragedies – Ukraine being the most recent example – we need these stories now more than ever. I'm so grateful that Lloyd Suh has created a parable of resilience that can provide hope in even the most uncertain of times.”
