New Restaurant Brings Healthy Grab-and-Go Option to South Atlanta

Seasoned Smoothie King Franchisee Opens First Grub Fresh Bowls & Wraps Location in Hapeville

Grub Fresh Bowls & Wraps, now open in Hapeville, offers residents a new, healthy option for high quality, delicious and fresh fast food, close to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Atlanta’s south side. The new quick-serve restaurant was created with active, busy people who seek convenient yet nutritious food-on-the-go in mind. The successful grand opening event last Saturday is an indication that Grub Fresh Bowls & Wraps is a welcomed addition to the Tri-Cities-Cities area.

Grub founder Philip Jones is no stranger to the Hapeville neighborhood. A Chicago native and now 13 year Atlanta transplant, he saw the need for additional healthy food options in South Atlanta outside of his already established success as a Smoothie King Owner/Franchisee of 4 locations, including the location directly adjacent to Grub Fresh Bowls and Wraps. Jones also owns a Smoothie King franchise in South Fulton on Old National Hwy.

“I created Grub because I would spend hours looking for something quick and healthy to eat,” said Philip Jones, Grub Fresh Bowls & Wraps founder.

“The lack of options made it challenging to maintain a healthy lifestyle while working such a busy schedule. After years of frustration, I decided to recruit a classically-trained chef to help me take my passionate idea and create a solution that left me feeling satisfied and recharged.”

Jones collaborated with Chef Kelley Hicks, who has nearly two decades of industry experience, to develop the menu. The two created non-traditional bowl and wrap options, which change seasonally, and all food is made in-house, from scratch with fresh ingredients. Guests can choose jasmine rice, brown rice and or flatbread wrap to accompany any menu item, including:

  • Jerk Chicken Bowl (sautéed peppers and onions, pineapple salsa, mango jerk sauce, shaved lettuce)
  • Sweet and Spicy Salmon Bowl (edamame, shredded cabbage, green onions, sesame seeds, sweet chili, haricot vert)
  • Southwest Bowl (pico de gallo, black beans, roasted corn, green onions and cilantro, shaved lettuce)
  • Philly Cheesesteak Wrap
  • Buffalo Chicken Wrap
  • Grilled Veggie Wrap with spicy harissa.

Chef Kelley Hicks knows that people love continental cuisine but still wanted to try new foods. She developed straight forward recipes for Grub that can be tweaked to become vegetarian by omitting one or two items and substituting more vegetable options. A vegan menu will also launch over the next six months. In this way, Grub accommodates all customer dietary needs easily with its scratch-made, healthy menu. Cooking since she was 7, she studied at Le Cordon Bleu. Her wide-ranging experience includes being featured on The Food Network and working in five-star hotels, catering, fine dining and celebrity private chef services.

For the last 12 years, Jones has owned and operated four Smoothie King franchised locations around Atlanta. Understanding the needs and desires of his customers as well as the Hapeville traffic patterns and site specifics helped him develop a second food concept restaurant. He plans to perfect the Grub business model in Hapeville before embarking on his plan to open five Grub locations throughout metro Atlanta in five years.

Offering contactless pick-up and delivery options, all team members get temperature checks and health screenings before their shift and wear protective gear. Grub will sanitize all high contact surfaces and seating throughout the day and comply with state and local social distancing guidelines. Currently, Grub offers only outdoor seating and grab and go options, no drive-thru.

Grub Fresh Bowls & Wraps is near the Atlanta airport, located at 876 Virginia Avenue, Suite B, Hapeville, GA 30354. They offer catering and delivery services, including DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub and Postmates. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
