New Fantastic Forces Exhibit Debuts at Fernbank Museum

Topic: 50th Anniversary of Moon Landing

July 17, 2019

Fernbank Museum will debut Fantastic Forces, an all-new permanent exhibit on Saturday, July 20, engaging guests of all ages in dynamic, hands-on experiences that explore combustion, aerodynamics, plate tectonics, centripetal force, simple machines and other areas of STEM* learning. The opening coincides with the 50th anniversary of one of the most incredible scientific achievements in history—the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.

Guests will boldly blast off, defy gravity, play tug of war, twist, shake, float and fly as they interact with the forces and processes that shape our planet—from the constructive and destructive forces of nature to the physical forces that influence the motion and behavior of all matter.

Activities include interactive stations that highlight the science of rockets, tornadoes, earthquakes, liquefaction, lightning, planetary orbits, gravity, and more. From using pulleys to elevate themselves into the air to building hot wax volcanoes, and from creating a tornado to launching a rocket, guests will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of scientific principles.

Fantastic Forces is an opportunity for guests to explore the forces of nature in a fun and dynamic way, while at the same time engaging their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills,” said Fernbank Museum’s Vice President of Programming & Collections, Dr. Bobbi Hohmann. “We are so excited to introduce this new hands-on, minds-on exhibit for our guests to enjoy for years to come.”

Fantastic Forces opens as part of Fernbank’s Moon Landing Celebration on Saturday, July 20, reinforcing many of the principles that enabled Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to take the first steps on the moon. In addition to the new exhibit, the Moon Landing Celebration features space-themed activities, special screenings of Apollo 11: First Steps Edition and access to the special NASA exhibit, Sun, Earth, Universe.

Fantastic Forces is located inside Fernbank Museum at 767 Clifton Road NE in Atlanta and is included with museum admission. Museum admission tickets are $20 for adults, $19 for seniors, $18 for children and free for members. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit FernbankMuseum.org or call 404.929.6400.
