A Boy Mom's Review of Marvel Universe LIVE!

By Kristen Wright-Matthews, Editor and Publisher, Macaroni Kid College Park-East Point-Morrow March 4, 2019

Year after year for as long as I can remember, there have been live shows for girls, but none specifically created for boys. It’s true that Disney incorporates some of its male characters into their shows, but let’s be real when you think of Disney, the first thing that comes to mind, even before Mickey, are princesses. For that reason, I have never been that interested in taking my oldest son to Disney shows. Now the mother of two sons, 11 and 2 years old, I was elated when I heard that Marvel Universe LIVE! was coming to Atlanta. When I received an invitation from Feld Entertainment to review the show at State Farm Arena, I was all in. I couldn't respond "YES" quickly enough. Marvel Universe Live! is packed with most of the things little boys enjoy – superheroes, of course; motorcycles, explosions, fighting, and stunts, but it doesn't exclude the girls.

The narrative is a classic comic book story. Your favorite Marvel characters, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Panther, Black Widow, and the Guardians of the Galaxy unite in a race against time to defeat Loki in an epic quest to defend the universe from evil. The storyline is basic enough for the littles to enjoy, but detailed enough to keep older kids' attention. The show is filled with action involving new feuds with old foes, pitting siblings against one another, and student vs. mentor. Although there is a lot of fighting, superheroes against villains, but it is not scary. My two-year-old and 11-year-old enjoyed it just alike. It truly a show that transcends age.

In the first act, there are some really cool effects with heroes and villains flying across the stage and aliens moving about. Lots of cars and motorcycle tricks, and some well-timed explosions. The second act is even more exciting, with even more battles. The climax occurs when Bruce Banner turns into the Hulk. My boys loved that, especially the little whose first words might have been, “Hulk Smash.”

Overall, it was a pretty good show, but as a mom, a boy mom at that, these are the things I liked most:

1) The non-stop action keeps even the smallest, most active children still. Oops! Did I say that? I meant engaged. The stunts were amazing and there was always a lot going on.

2) There is no distinction between male and female characters. Little girls need to see images that display them as powerful, and not always as a damsel in distress. #girlsruletheworld

3) The costumes are very fashionable; bright, contemporary and appropriate.

4) Seeing this show will invoke young boys’ interest in attending live shows (ie, stage plays, puppet shows, etc.).

5) It’s a classic story of good versus evil, and the good guys always win.

I apologize for the poor photo quality. Our seats weren't as good as the show. :-(

Our contest winners...SUPER SIBLINGS. Aren't they adorable? Thanks for the great pictures!
