The Dancing Granny

Alliance is on the road for Summer 2017

By Marshall W Mabry IV June 28, 2017

My family and I visited the High's Museum's Media reveal for the Dancing Granny.  We toured the Ashley Bryan exhibit and then were surprised with a small excerpt from the show.  My son is a member of the Alliance's Teen Panel for this year.  To read more on that program and the Alliance you can see my guest post on 365 Atlanta Parent here.  Here is my son's review of the show:

I was lucky enough to be at the high museum on the day that Dancing Granny was first previewed, even before they'd even started rehearsal. Now nearly two months later I'm proud to announce that I'm a part of the Alliance Theatre's teen ensemble program.  As a member, I recently got to see this super dope show.

I love that this show is all acapella, which is something I hadn't even thought about until I was talking to one of the cast members of the show. We were talking about how whatever comes out of his mouth is the key they're in for the whole song because there's no underscoring or a safety for him to sing with.

It's actually amazing to hear about the adjustments made during shows especially with the harmonies they're singing. I loved this show mostly because of the music. Seeing how heavily they relied on rhythm and drums showed me that you can tell a story with literally anything.

I also loved the different styles of dance they used to tell the story.  I loved the flow of it all, from music to dance and everything. It's almost like the perfect show. It's less than an hour, one act, and has a stellar cast. Overall this show gets a 10/10 from me!
