Feeding our Families through the Pandemic (New Info added 7/13/20)

Updated local resources to prevent food insecurity for Atlanta residents

By Kristen Wright Matthews, Editor & Publisher, Macaroni Kid College Park * East Point * Morrow March 20, 2020

In uncertain times like what we're experiencing since it was announced that schools would close indefinitely, the last thing we as parents want to worry about is how we're going to feed our families. With the added burden of having to provide additional meals, it is refreshing to know that school districts, religious organizations, nonprofits, and other community members are doing their part to make sure that we get through this crisis at least without the worry of having nothing to eat. Here we will do our best to keep this list updated so that families can come here to find local resources in South Fulton and North Clayton counties and beyond. We are constantly updating this information so keep checking back.

PLEASE CALL AHEAD TO ANY FOOD DISTRIBUTION SITE TO ENSURE EVENTS ARE ACCURATE AND FOOD IS AVAILABLE.

Fulton County Schools is leveraging the USDA’s Seamless Summer Option to serve meals during our school closure. As the name indicates, this program feeds underserved students during our summer months. Meals are served free of charge to any child age 18 years and under. Schools offering this program are selected based on the socio-economic status of students residing within the school attendance area or the socio-economic status of feeder schools. Multiple meals are provided in each package so that students have meals from the day of pick-up until the next day of service.

While schools are closed indefinitely, Clayton County Public Schools will serve breakfast and lunch meals at twenty-three (23) sites. All meals served at all schools are on a grab and go basis. Those eligible for this service must be 18 or younger or individuals with a state-defined mental or physical disability. Meal service hours are 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. which allows children to pick up both breakfast and lunch at the same time.

Beginning March 27, Clayton County Public Schools will partner with the Atlanta Community Food Bank to provide grocery services to the families of CCPS students at five locations. Volunteers are needed for this initiative at the five Food Bank locations and should arrive by 10:00 a.m. every Thursday until further notice to package food items. Additionally, volunteers are needed to assist in distributing the packaged food to participants and should arrive by 8:00 a.m. every Friday, at the sites until further notice. Individuals interested in assisting with this volunteer opportunity should confirm via email at ccpscommunications@clayton.k12.ga.us.

It is important to note that District Officials are continuing to monitor the impact of COVID-19 on our state and nation and will adjust plans as needed in response to changing circumstances. All updates will be communicated as they occur.

Please see the following flyer for details regarding the Grab-N-Go meal service and the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
