Westlake HS students participate in “Do Good December” initiative

Two events will be held in support of graduate Christion Abercrombie, injured during college game

December 18, 2018

Westlake High School students are holding two events in support of graduate Christion Abercrombie and his family. Abercrombie, who was critically injured this fall when his Tennessee State University football team played Vanderbilt University, will be honored with student-led events as part of their “Do Good December” initiative.

The first event is a December 18 fundraiser at Chick-fil-A on Camp Creek Parkway, with a portion of proceeds earned between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to go to Christion’s family. The second event will be a school homecoming on December 19 for Abercrombie, with remarks from his family, former coach and teammates as well as a special presentation from the Chick-fil-A Leader Academy and 21st Century Leaders -- two student groups who coordinated the events.

“We’re trying to give back to Christion and his family because he gave so much to Westlake,” said Chick-fil-A Leader Academy member Asher Spivey, a senior and football player at Westlake. “The Chick-fil-A Leader Academy, along with 21st Century Leaders, has a goal to do one big project during December that initiates change. Helping the Abercrombie family in support of his recovery process is our project.”

Westlake says their inclusion of programs like the Chick-fil-A Leader Academy and 21st Century Leaders furthers the school district’s strategy of preparing all students to graduate ready to pursue and succeed on their chosen paths.

“These programs help develop great leaders that others can follow,” said Program Coordinator Ouida Burke. “Our Do Good December initiative, in particular, teaches students how to be world changers one community at a time.”

The celebration will include appearances by Fulton County Board of Education President Linda Bryant and South Fulton Mayor Bill Edwards.
