A Note From Your Publisher About Mindfulness

Keeping it Simple in 2018

By Kristen Wright-Matthews; Publisher, Macaroni Kid College Park-East Point-Morrow January 13, 2018

This year, I decided not to create a long list of resolutions that I knew would not make it through January. I created a vision board for all the things that I envision for myself, but my buzz word for this year is mindfulness. My goal is to consistently and wholeheartedly practice being a more mindful person. For those of you who do not know what that means, mindfulness is being fully present in the moment. It is relatively simple in theory but can be quite challenging to put into practice because as humans, it has innately been a part of our nature to worry about our future and to hold on to our pasts. I have been meditating inconsistently for about four years now, but in 2018, I am consciously trying to make time for it every morning because self-care is super important. The older I get, the more I realize that if I do not take care of myself, I cannot take care of anyone else. And let me tell you, having a toddler at 44 years old is no easy task. I need to eat my Wheaties for this one.

Anyway, in being mindful, it is my personal goal to nourish myself with the things I need, and I love, my community, and our world through eating, moving, giving, creating, and loving. Whether it be a regular facial and/or a mani/pedi, or running a 5K, well maybe 2.5. Trying new, healthy recipes with wholesome, natural ingredients, journaling, planning a community event, or just hanging out with my family, this year I will focus on those things that make me happy so that I can be a better, wife, mom, daughter, sister, friend, and ultimately, human being. I am recalibrating myself with me in mind.

If you care to replenish with me, here are some initial steps you can take to help you to be happier, healthier, and more mindful you in 2018.

THE STEPS:

1.   Listen to your inner voice. Focusing on others, especially around the holidays, although joyful, can disconnect you from yourself. Take this time to get back in touch with your deepest thoughts and feelings.

2.   Unplug yourself from social media occasionally, and connect with the people who are important to you. Create moments with your partner, children, friends, parents, neighbors, community, and world.

3.   Breathe in nature. You don’t have to wait for warm weather to plant your feet on the earth and take in a deep, fresh breath of air.

4.   Eat sustaining, nutrient-rich foods. Turn down the processed foods.

5.   Move with care. Don’t push yourself or others too hard. Go only as far as your mind, body, and spirit allow you to go at any given moment.

6.   Be kind and accepting of yourself and those around you.

7.     Drink plenty of water, and tea if you like it!

Namaste!
