Pretty Brown Girls of Metro Atlanta

Letter from the Editor

By Kimberly Bryant March 14, 2017

I was recently invited to speak at a meeting of the Pretty Brown Girls of Metro Atlanta GirlPrenuer Day.

I get several invitations to speak about entrepreneurship throughout the year.  Most have to do with me being a Pastry Chef.  This invite was no different.  Having the skill set of a master cake artist comes with some oohhhs and ahhs and a lot of questions from kids!

Of course I accepted the invitation, not really knowing what I was in for.  I spoke to 3 sessions of young ladies about what it means to be a woman in business.  Not only about what it means to be my own boss but to be a mom and how I juggle my work and personal life.  It was an engaging opportunity for me to talk with these young ladies about the realities of being a work at home, homeschooling, business owner, wife and mentor!

While I did my best to impress upon these young ladies that the sky really is the limit they made a lasting impression upon me!  So much so, I registered my daughter to be a member a few days after speaking.

Pretty Brown Girls Inc, seeks to empower the world one girl at a time.  From understanding that while other community based groups are fantastic for socialization there is indeed an organization created for beautiful little brown girls.  Their faces lite up as the key note speaker talked about three 11 year old entreprenuers.  Elle Magazine's Marley Mag is an online resource housing 1,000 books about african american girls!  Bee Sweet Lemonade's founder Mikayla Umer has her product in Whole Food's market nation wide, but it started simply because she wanted to save bees!  Lastly 11 yr old fashion designer Egypt Efele launched her own chubii girl clothing line because she was bullied in school.

While it's fantastic to have girls looking up to me, it's even more empowering to help them understand they can be girlprenuers and we can build a new generation of powerhouse CEOs while other kids still play with video games!
