This Week in Macaroni Kid CEM

Covering Families and Communities in South Fulton and Clayton County!

I've been waiting all summer for this week! The start of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London! It's finally arrived and are you as excited as I am about the track and field events, gymnastics, basketball and swimming? I'm team USA all the way and can't wait until the opening ceremony, so let the games begin!

Even though my daughter is only three, we've already been talking about and doing activities around the theme of the Olympics. Whether you have young children or children in high school and you're looking at using this summer Olympics as a teachable moment, you should check out this website, Activity Village. They offer up lots of free printables, coloring activities, games, worksheets and even recipes all centered around the Olympics!

In this issue of Macaroni Kid we didn't want to leave out the Olympics so we've included: Olympic Trivia and What Elite Athletes Can Teach Our Kids.

Finally, we wanted to give a HUGE Macaroni Kid Shout-Out to all of our sponsors who have given us the opportunity to give you all tickets and discounts to some fabulous shows and events: Theater of the Stars, Theatrical Outfit, The Fox Theatre, Marketing Inspirations, Georgia Aquarium, Medieval Times, BRAVE PR, Super WHY and The Legacy Theatre. Thank you, thank you, and thank you!!

  • In honor of National Lasagna Day (July 29) the Macaroni Menu features Lasagna Roll-Ups that entire family can make together.
  • Don't throw away those scraps of paper, old magazines, bottle tops and toilet paper rolls! We've got some ideas on how to turn your trash into your children's art in Macaroni Made! Plus learn how participating in open-ended art projects can be invaluable learning for your toddler or preschooler.

Finally, here are a few notable holidays happening this week.

Macaroni Review: Medieval Times (WIN 4 Tix!)

July 31st is Macaroni Kid Day at Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament

The all new show at Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament is simply a family affair. It had been a few years since my husband and I had been to Medieval Times so we were all too excited at the opportunity to go again and take our daughter for the first time! The icing on the cake was that this was going to be a brand new live show!

From the moment we drove into the parking lot and saw the watchtowers atop of the sprawling castle and a horse being escorted ...

WIN: 4 TIX to Addams Family at The Fox Theatre!

The weird and wonderful family comes to devilishly delightful life in THE ADDAMS FAMILY. This magnificently macabre new musical comedy is created by Jersey Boys authors Marshall Brickman & Rice Elice, Drama Desk-winning composer/lyricist Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party), choreographer Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys) and Olivier Award-winning director/designers Phelim McDermott & Julian Crouch (Shockheaded Peter) with creative consultation by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks.

WIN: Tix To Adventures of High John the Conqueror

Now Through August 12, 2012 at the Balzer Theater at Herren's in Downtown Atlanta

Note if you entered this contest last week, you do not need to re-enter.

The story of High John the Conqueror (sometimes simply known as "High John") is about an African prince who was sold into slavery in the Americas.

He become known for the clever tricks he played to evade his slave holders, always outwitting them. In fact, it's said that the character Br'er Rabbit of Joel Chandler Harris' "Uncle Remus" stories was inspired by High John and his antics.

Folk tales of trickster High John the ...

What Elite Athletes Can Teach Our Kids

Keeping Your Eye on the Goal
Whether it's being an Olympic athlete or winning the school spelling bee, achieving a goal requires a tremendous amount of commitment. Michael Phelps does two four-hour practices every day. The 27-year-old has been training for well over half his life. As a teenager, certainly there were times he would rather have slept in late or hung out with his friends. But he had been dreaming of being a swimming champion since watching the 1996 Summer Olympics and was willing to make the necessary ...

Olympic Trivia

The First
The first recorded Olympic Games took place in Ancient Greece in 776 BC. The only event was a "stade," a foot race about 600 feet in length. This is where the word "stadium" originates. The athletes participated nude or "gymnos." This is where the word "gymnasium" originates.

The Countries
205 different nations will be competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Greece is the only nation to have participated under its own flag in every modern Summer Olympic Games.

London Calling
2012 will be London's third time hosting ...

Every Dog Has Its Day!

July 23rd is National Hot Dog Day

Its summertime and hot dogs are center stage on the grill and at picnics all across America. They are at the ballpark, the carnivals, they are sold from carts on street corners in every city . . . they are not that hard to find.

Enjoy National Hot Dog Day (July 23) to the fullest. Have a couple of hot dogs for lunch or dinner. And, don't forget to cook a few on a stick at the evening campfire.

What's in a hot dog?

Don't ask and we won't ...

Simple Tips for A Healthier Lifestyle

A Balanced Diet and Physical Activity are Essential for Healthy Living

When it comes to having a healthy lifestyle, eating fruits and vegetables is just one piece of the puzzle. For a long-term healthy lifestyle, you'll need to find a balance between good eating habits and physical activity.

That's the message from the "Let's move!" campaign, a nationwide initiative designed to fight the growing rate of childhood obesity, and promote a healthy lifestyle for people of all ages.

Here are a few simple tips to help you and your children live a healthier life:

  • Eat five fruits and ...

The Value of Open-Ended Art Experiences

You don't need to be a trained artist or spend a lot of money to experience the joy of art with your children. There are so many fun and easy art activities that can be created with inexpensive, easily accessible, sometimes free materials. Look around your house and save things that you normally discard. The opportunities for open-ended, process-oriented art are endless.

Young children need and benefit from regular exposure to art experiences that encourage the development of their self-expression, independence, and exploration of a variety of interesting materials ...

Macaroni Made: Recycled Art!

Children enjoy 3-dimensional art. Here are some easy ways to provide them with occasions to manipulate objects, develop their sense of the aesthetic, explore mathematical concepts, ignite their imaginations, appreciate recycling, and just have lots of fun.

Make it a habit to save things that you usually throw out. Here are some ideas; bottle caps, lids, corks, Styrofoam packing materials ("peanuts" and large pieces"), egg cartons, paper milk cartons, cottage cheeses and yogurt containers, smooth scraps of wood (no splinters), small boxes, wrapping paper, ribbons, bows, fabric scraps, magazine or ...

In honor of the upcoming National Lasagna Day holiday (July 29), Macaroni Kid CEM is featuring this wonderful noodle recipe for your family.

There were super easy and fun to make. It would be great to do with your kiddos. If too young to help you as the Sous Chef, they'll make very good taste testers!

What you need:

- Lasagna noodles

- Leftover spaghetti sauce
- Cupcake baking pans

Cook your lasagna noodles. Simply follow the instructions on the box. Once noodles
