This Week in Macaroni Kid CEM

Covering Families and Communities in South Fulton and Clayton County!

Today is National Pick a Strawberry Day! And how appropriate since the season for picking fresh strawberries is coming to a close next month!

In Atlanta there are some great local farms where you can take the kids strawberry picking. Our family's favorite is Southern Belle Farm in McDonough.

While the strawberries or other seasonal fruit (just wait blueberries are coming next!) are the focus for going, Southern Belle Farms actually offers quite a bit to do so you can really spend a few hours out there.

They have a small petting zoo where the kids can see farm animals up close, a little playground and also lots of grassy fields for kids to play! So you can essentially just turn the kids loose on the many activities they have while you and the other adults get to relax in the shade and enjoy some of their homemade goodies like strawberry ice cream and strawberry shortcake.

If you love strawberries like we do, be sure to hurry and get out there as strawberry picking season ends in June! And if my post here isn't enough to persuade you, perhaps the idea of getting fresh, right off the vine strawberries to make this DELICIOUS recipe for "Triple-Decker Strawberry Cake" will!

Now, here's what you can expect in your newsletter this week...

Fight Brain Drain and Weight Gain

New YMCA Survey Reveals Parents Struggle to Keep Kids Fit

Today, nearly one in three U.S. children is overweight or obese, and while summer should be a time to get up, get out and grow, kids will be at a greater risk for brain drain and weight gain when the school year ends.

Research shows that without activities to keep their minds and bodies active, kids are likely to gain weight twice as fast (1) and show little to no academic growth over the summer than during the school year (2).

Despite these findings, only 21 percent of American ...

Is Your Teen Ready for Summer Driving?

Tips for Parents and Teens to Make this a Safer Summer on the Roads

According to the most recent data, over 1,000 youth were killed on our nation's highway during the summer of 2010 and preliminary numbers for 2011 are not looking any better.

It's that time of year when young people get to enjoy the wondrous summer break. They're ready for summer jobs, beach trips, more free time, and all of the extra activities summer brings.

But with all of this fun comes some very sobering news. Teens are now entering the deadlines months on our nations' highways for ...

Staying Safe in Summer

Tip to Keep Your Child (and Others) Playing Safely at the Playground

Summer is nearly upon us and that means a lot more of the kids and a lot less for them to do! Playgrounds are a go-to place for moms and kids alike so it's important to remember "safety first" when it comes to playing at your local playground.

Moms are safety experts when it comes to their kids yet it's easy to accidentally become complacent and overlook the little things when in familiar surroundings like a playground. Take this refresher course and be sure your kids are extra ...

Macaroni Review: Wild Animal Safari

What an adventure my family was on this weekend!

We took a trip to Pine Mountain, Georgia - about an hour drive from South Atlanta - to visit the Wild Animal Safari. Beyond our amazing wildlife encounter experience at Zoo Atlanta, this was really the first time we got so close to such an amazing variety of animals.

Visitors to the animal park have the option of either driving their own vehicles through or renting one of their zebra vans that start at $15. We chose to rent the van which we ...

Your Local Area Farmers' Markets!

Shop Local, Shop Often for Fresh Fruits, Veggies and More!

Spring time means it's that time of year to start heading to our local Farmers' Markets for fresh, locally grown and perhaps organic produce, fruits and vegetables. If you're like me, you love to walk around the stalls and talk to the growers about their products (maybe even try to do a little haggling since that's not something you can do at the large grocery chains)!

Farmers' markets also provide a great way to get kids involved in the family's meals and it gives them a ...

Celebrate Memorial Day with An Historic Day Trip!

Visit Georgia State Parks, Forts or Battlefields

As friends and family gather for picnics and holiday celebrations over Memorial Day weekend, take some time to honor those who fought on American soil. Georgia is home to many significant historical battlefields and forts that have been meticulously preserved. A visit to a fort is a great way to teach the kids about our country’s rich history and honor those who have fallen.

Below are some suggested day trips to forts and museums across Georgia.

Fort King George State Historic Site, Darien
From 1721 until 1736, this fort ...

Macaroni Menu: Fish Tacos!

Make a Familiar Dish Fun and a Little Different!

If you haven't managed to get your kids eating fish yet, try fish tacos. Most kids enjoy build it yourself meals so this may be the perfect gateway!  Sometimes once you get a kid to taste something for the first time in a "fun" dish, they're willing to eat it presented other ways.

If they like it, lift your glass and make a toast to your open minded fish eating child! They will see that trying something new is something to celebrate and may be more likely to ...

Macaroni Made: Painting with Kids!

Children love to paint! There is something very satisfying about the movement of the brush, their hands, or various tools as they apply paint to different surfaces and see the effects of their actions. There are many ways to paint using a variety of materials that will delight the senses. Tempera paint can be purchased at a craft store and is an excellent medium for young children.

Tempera Paint Variations

Mix different items in the paint to create interesting textures. Try mixing in laundry soap (helps with clean-up), liquid starch ...
